Tissue engineering refers to the design and application of biologically informed constructs, materials, cells, or systems intended to restore, replace, maintain, or improve tissue structure and function.

Tissue engineering refers to the design and application of biologically informed constructs, materials, cells, or systems intended to restore, replace, maintain, or improve tissue structure and function. It commonly integrates principles from cell biology, biomaterials, biomechanics, manufacturing, and clinical medicine. Within regenerative and reparative discourse, the term often implies a more deliberately engineered strategy than native healing alone, including scaffolds, delivery systems, culture-based constructs, or biofabricated approaches. It is not interchangeable with all regenerative medicine, because some regenerative strategies rely primarily on endogenous biology without a formal engineering component.

Use when an engineered scaffold, construct, material system, cell-material combination, or design-driven therapeutic approach is central to the intervention.

Avoid Use:

Avoid for purely biologic or procedural therapies that do not meaningfully involve engineering design principles.
